Abstract

This book review examines Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata, a contemporary Japanese novel that critically explores issues of social conformity, self-identity, and gender roles in modern society. The novel portrays the life of Keiko Furukura, a woman who finds meaning and stability through her long-term work at a convenience store while resisting socially imposed expectations such as marriage and permanent employment. This review aims to analyze the novel’s thematic focus and its contribution to discussions on individuality and social norms. Through a critical literary approach, the review highlights Murata’s use of a minimalist narrative style to challenge dominant societal definitions of normality and success. The analysis reveals that Convenience Store Woman functions as a form of social criticism by exposing the pressure to conform and the marginalization of those who deviate from accepted norms. Overall, this book offers significant academic value for studies in contemporary Japanese literature, identity, and gender discourse.
